"I shouldn’t be alive!”

I had just completed a scratchboard engraving of a hydrangea plant growing in our yard when my wife related the story behind the plant. She purchased the plant from the big box store clearance section late last summer. The plant was withering and on it’s last leg. She brought the plant home and began nursing it back to health. It over wintered in a pot outside and endured one of the coldest winter ever here in Central Arkansas. She planted it in the ground in the following spring. One day this summer I browsed through her garden looking for subject matter for an engraving. Backlighting provided by the late afternoon sun passed through the clumps of flowers revealing the structure of the backside of the plant. The challenge was to capture the complex, concave architecture.
